Inspiration

We were inspired by the need to motivate youth-at-risk in a positive and sustainable way. By incorporating gamification and a reward-based system, we aimed to make responsibility-building engaging and enjoyable for the boys at MWH.

What It Does

The Muhammadiyah Mama Mart system:

  • Allows residents to earn points (vouchers) by completing specific tasks.
  • Provides an engaging minimart interface where vouchers can be redeemed for items.
  • Promotes a sense of achievement, responsibility, and accountability.

How We Built It

  • Frontend: Built a user-friendly web interface for task tracking, voucher management, and shopping using CSS, HTML and Javascript
  • Backend: Used a robust PostgreSQL database on Supabase to store task data, user profiles, voucher balances, and purchase history.
  • Integration: Combined the minimart system with the task management feature to streamline rewards.

Challenges We Ran Into

  • Behavioral Motivation: Creating a system that consistently motivates the boys to participate.
  • Resource Allocation: Designing a minimart that balances rewards and encourages strategic planning.
  • Technical Integration: Ensuring seamless functionality across login, task completion, and minimart modules.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Successfully implemented a gamified system that encourages active participation in daily tasks.
  • Developed an intuitive and engaging web interface.

What We Learned

  • The importance of aligning technology solutions with human behavior to drive meaningful change.
  • How gamification can be a powerful tool for motivation and engagement.
  • The challenges and nuances of developing solutions for at-risk populations.

What’s Next for Muhammadiyah Mama Mart

  • Expand the System: Introduce more tasks, reward options, and challenges for residents.
  • Performance Tracking: Add analytics to monitor residents’ progress and engagement over time.
  • Feedback Loop: Gather input from MWH staff and residents to improve the system’s functionality and impact.
  • Scalability: Explore opportunities to implement the system in similar homes and organizations.
