Inspiration
Open source powers the software we use every day, yet contributing for the first time can be overwhelming. Developers often spend hours searching through thousands of GitHub repositories only to find issues that are too advanced, already assigned, or unrelated to their skills.
We built Mr. Git to remove that barrier. Our goal is to make open source contributions accessible by instantly connecting developers with real GitHub issues that match their skills, experience, and interests—so they can spend less time searching and more time building.
What it does
Mr. Git is an AI-powered open source contribution discovery platform.
Users simply select their technical skills, experience level, and areas of interest. Within seconds, Mr. Git finds real GitHub issues that are highly relevant to their profile.
Each recommendation includes:
- Repository details including stars, forks, and primary language
- Real GitHub issue title and description
- Match score based on the user's profile
- Estimated difficulty level
- Repository activity status
- Personalized match reasons explaining why the issue is a good fit
- Direct GitHub links to start contributing immediately
Additional features include:
- Smart filtering and sorting
- Bookmark favorite opportunities
- Search history
- Responsive, developer-focused interface
- Modern dark mode experience
How we built it
Mr. Git was built using Next.js 15, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, shadcn/ui, Framer Motion, and deployed on Vercel.
The frontend communicates with a backend API that searches GitHub and intelligently ranks opportunities based on the user's selected skills, experience level, and interests.
We focused heavily on performance, accessibility, responsive design, and creating a polished SaaS experience that developers would enjoy using.
Challenges we ran into
- Designing an accurate matching system that recommends relevant GitHub issues instead of simply returning search results.
- Handling large amounts of GitHub data while keeping search fast and responsive.
- Creating a clean interface capable of displaying repository information, issue details, and match explanations without overwhelming users.
- Optimizing the application for both desktop and mobile devices while maintaining a premium user experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a fully functional platform that recommends real GitHub issues developers can contribute to immediately.
- Created a modern, responsive interface with smooth animations and intuitive interactions.
- Developed a personalized matching system that considers skills, experience, and interests rather than relying on simple keyword searches.
- Delivered a production-ready web application with fast performance and a polished developer experience.
What we learned
Throughout this project we learned that building useful developer tools requires more than just accurate search results—it requires thoughtful user experience and meaningful recommendations.
We also gained valuable experience in API integration, data processing, performance optimization, responsive UI design, and creating scalable web applications with modern technologies.
What's next for Mr. Git
Our vision is to make Mr. Git the easiest way to contribute to open source.
