What Mr. Bin Does
Mr. Bin is the first of its kind household waste management system that tracks and categorises household trash to generate useful analytics, with an aim to reduce household waste consumption and increase its recycling rate.
Mr. Bin uses a low cost micro controller to collect and process sensor data using machine learning, artificial intelligence and analytics.
Key Features of Mr. Bin
⁃ Identifies the type of waste, and categorises them into general waste, food waste or recyclables (plastic, metal, paper, e-waste, glass)
⁃ Detects the bin’s fill level, and informs users to empty the bin when it is full
⁃ Weighs each discarded waste as well as the total amount of waste present in the bin
⁃ Generation of insightful analytics for users to monitor and compare their waste consumption
How Mr. Bin Works
- First, the rubbish is placed into the bin, the sensors then identify the type and quantity of the waste discarded and measures the bin’s existing capacity.
- The controller then generates analytics, such as a daily waste record (includes the number of times Mr. Bin was full, the categorisation of waste, the total weight of waste and individual weight of each category) and a monthly trend (average number of times Mr. Bin was full, total weight of waste in each month, percentage of each category of waste in each month).
- Finally, users can view their consumption graphs via a website. They can monitor their waste consumption patterns and compare them with their neighbours and the national average. Useful tips and an incentive programme can also be found on the site.
*The neighbour average is derived based on the average waste of similar housing types using Mr. Bin within a block or street for landed premises.
How Mr. Bin Positively Impacts the Environment
⁃ Empower with Information: Allow households to know exactly how much waste they produce, and to monitor their waste consumption patterns and compare them with others. Users will be able to see the connection between their efforts and their overall outcomes, allowing them to evaluate their methods and gain further motivation to continue. Additionally, users are informed of the amount of recyclables that they have thrown away, raising their awareness of what could have been recycled, in hopes of increasing households’ recycling rates
⁃ Educate households: The website provides useful tips and advice which educate households on how to reduce waste and how to properly recycle.
⁃ Incentivise: Households who successfully reduce waste by 10% every 3 months will be given credits which can subsequently be exchanged for cash & other rewards
