Inspiration

In Uganda and many other regions, there exists a substantial lack of transparency and accountability in traditional crowdfunding and financial assistance mechanisms. This lack of transparency often results in donors and contributors being unable to track or verify how their contributions are being utilized. Additionally, many individuals and community initiatives that require financial support face challenges in effectively connecting with potential funders. This situation worsened after being severely hit and affected by COVID-19.

We recognized these issues as a significant barrier to financial inclusion, especially for marginalized communities and students who struggle to access education due to financial constraints. We saw a need for a platform that could bridge the gap between those in need and those willing to support through a transparent and accountable crowdfunding model.

MpaMpe's innovative approach addresses this problem by offering a digital platform that ensures transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in crowdfunding efforts, ultimately empowering communities and individuals to access the financial support they require for their needs.

The name "MpaMpe" locally means Give Me, I Give Out, reflecting its goal of being a hybrid crowdfunding application tailored for the Ugandan ecosystem.

Four Main Features of MpaMpe

MpaMpe is a crowdfunding platform designed to promote financial inclusion and empower communities. It offers several features to facilitate its mission, including:

  • Campaign Creation and Management: MpaMpe allows users to create crowdfunding campaigns to raise funds for a wide range of causes, such as education, healthcare, community development, and more. Campaign organizers can set funding goals, describe their cause, and share their campaigns with potential contributors.

  • Transparent and Accountable Fund Management: One of MpaMpe's key features is its commitment to transparency. The platform ensures that contributions are used as intended by providing accountability mechanisms. Campaign organizers must report on how funds are utilized, and contributors can track the impact of their donations.

  • Inclusivity: MpaMpe fosters inclusivity by allowing both monetary and non-monetary contributions. This means that people can support campaigns not only with money but also with in-kind donations or volunteering. This approach ensures that everyone can participate in supporting important causes.

  • Community Building: MpaMpe brings communities together by connecting campaign organizers with potential contributors. It provides a platform for individuals, organizations, and communities to collaborate and support each other. This sense of community is a fundamental aspect of MpaMpe's mission to promote financial inclusion and empower those in need.

How we built it

This is mainly a Node (JavaScript) and Flask (Python) project. We have incorporated multiple APIs to create a rich, diverse system that caters to our low-end users in Uganda. We have used Google Translate for NLP and website language translate, a chatbot built on top of Palm AI for user assistance and engagement in data collection, answering FAQs, providing crowdfunding tips, and more.

We have used both Checkout API (Payments) and Invoices Square APIs to facilitate donation giving globally, both instantly and at a later stage. We also have other payment models like crypto and mobile options for local users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have successfully carried out an offline campaign dubbed "10k 4 Oscar" (a fellow student at campus), raising over 1000 USD towards his tuition. We have also been recognized by our college for our efforts in bringing hope and transformation to society. You can learn more here.

We were among the top 50 in the Solution challenge of Google Students Club. We are also creating strategic partnerships that will propel us in the right direction.

What's next for MpaMpe

We plan to launch officially in April 2023 and conduct about 30 successful offline campaigns. We also hope to integrate the USSD Gateway and model to enable users with feature phones to carry out digital fundraising and receive support, thereby promoting fintech inclusion.
