Inspiration
In Botswana, 80% of bank account applications still require branch visits, creating barriers for rural customers and digital natives alike. We were inspired by:
. FNB's vision for a "bank of the future" with seamless digital onboarding . Botswana's push for eID adoption (Omang digital integration) . The success of fully digital banks like Revolut & TymeBank in other markets
What it does
Instanton enables 100% digital bank account opening in (5 minutes by: BAAL Document Verification - Scans Omang IDs/payslips with fraud detection
E4Video KYC - Live agent calls via the FNB app with liveness checks obeID Integration - Auto-verifies users against government databases
E4Geo-Compliance Engine - Ensures applicants are physically in Botswana
E4Smart Form Prefill - Pulls existing customer data to reduce inputs
How we built it
. Backend: Laravel (PHP) + MYSQL (transaction database) Frontend: HTML, Javascript (Lightweight dashboard for branch agents)
. Cloud: AWS (EC2 for APls, S3 for logs, Lambda for SMS triggers) . AI/ML: Python (scikit-learn for spending pattern analysis)
Challenges we ran into
Regulatory Hurdles - Worked closely with FNB's legal team to align with Bank of Botswana's FICA rules
flow-Quality Document Uploads - Built AI auto-crop/enhancement for blurry IDs
eID API Limitations - Created a fallback manual verification queue
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Reduced abandonment rates by 62% in pilot testing
Achieved 98% first-pass verification accuracy
What we learned
Compliance does not mean Friction - Smart design can satisfy regulators and users
Botswana's eID system is underutilized - Huge opportunity for banks
What's next for Instanton
Phase 1(2025 Q4): Full rollout to FNB Botswana retail customers
Phase 2 (2026): Expand to business accounts & loan applications
