Inspiration
When Crash Landing on You first aired on Netflix in 2019, it was no doubt one of-- if not the most-- popular K-Dramas at that time, amassing millions of viewers worldwide. Without context, the main characters ended up in Interlaken. Switzerland, leading to tourists from around the world flocking to a small mountainous town to live vicariously through their favorite characters. This is the backbone for our fusion of Asian media and wanderlust for travel.
What it does
MovieMonke is a travel search / social media hybrid web application that helps users find locations from their favorite shows and movies to travel to. An aggregated voting system allows users to contribute to the pages for locations they’ve been through and comment on what they love. They can view the interests of other users and compare “collections”.
How we built it
The vision started in a notebook. Then, we transferred the ideas to Figma wireframes to get a sense of what it would look like. After refining the design, we finally moved these to a Blazor web application, with version control handled by a GitHub repository.
Challenges we ran into
The size of the team made the load heavy on each person. We specialized in two areas: design and web development. Thus, it fell on each individual to do all of the work for their special area. It worked out due to high levels of cooperation and a clear vision, but it definitely made it hard.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We developed a beautiful set of wireframes and were able to convert this into a meaningful user experience, all within less than 36 hours.
What we learned
Design is hard. Creating wireframes can be a long process due to the vagueness of a vision statement. Starting early by developing ideas and being open to what may seem to be the “worst” of them can lead to innovation.
What's next for MovieMonke
This model was built to simulate the user experience. Taking advantage of .NET databases to create unique user accounts and implementing more images using blob storage would be a great continuation of this product. Going beyond that, we could develop data collection to cater to user interests.
