🎬 MovieMind AI
Inspiration
We've all spent way too much time scrolling through endless movie options, trying to decide what to watch next. While many recommendation platforms suggest movies, they rarely explain why those movies are recommended. I wanted to build something that feels more like talking to a movie-loving friend than using a search engine. That idea inspired me to create MovieMind AI.
What it does
MovieMind AI is an AI-powered movie recommendation system that combines a content-based machine learning model with Google's Gemini API. Users can search for a movie or ask for recommendations by genre, and the application provides personalized movie suggestions along with AI-generated explanations. It also displays movie posters using the TMDB API to create a more engaging experience.
How we built it
The recommendation engine was built using a content-based filtering approach. After preprocessing the movie dataset, I combined relevant movie features and used cosine similarity to find movies with similar characteristics.
I then integrated Google's Gemini API to generate natural-language explanations for the recommendations, making the application more conversational. TMDB API was used to fetch movie posters, while Streamlit provided the interactive web interface and deployment platform.
Tech Stack
- Python
- Streamlit
- Scikit-learn
- Pandas
- NumPy
- Google Gemini API
- TMDB API
- Streamlit Cloud
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was handling Gemini API quota limitations while keeping the application reliable. I solved this by separating the recommendation engine from the AI explanation service. If Gemini is temporarily unavailable, the recommendation engine continues to work normally while informing users that AI explanations are unavailable.
Another challenge was ensuring movie posters loaded correctly after deployment. Configuring API keys securely through Streamlit Secrets resolved the issue and made deployment much smoother.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully combined machine learning with generative AI in a single application.
- Built a conversational movie recommendation experience instead of a traditional recommendation list.
- Designed the system to remain functional even when the AI service is unavailable.
- Successfully deployed the application on Streamlit Cloud with secure API management.
- Created a clean, interactive, and user-friendly interface.
What we learned
This project helped me strengthen my understanding of recommendation systems, feature engineering, cosine similarity, API integration, prompt engineering, and deploying machine learning applications. More importantly, I learned the importance of designing resilient AI applications that continue delivering value even when external services experience temporary failures.
What's next for MovieMind AI
Future improvements include:
- Adding collaborative filtering for more personalized recommendations.
- Supporting user accounts, watchlists, and recommendation history.
- Enabling filtering by language, country, release year, and streaming platform.
- Improving conversational memory for richer AI interactions.
- Optimizing Gemini API usage through caching and prompt refinement.
- Expanding the application into a scalable backend service that can support both web and mobile clients.
