Inspiration

We were inspired by the magic of movies—how they transport us to new worlds and tell stories that stay with us. We wanted to bring that cinematic magic into real life by letting users explore the world through the lens of their favorite films. This idea fueled the creation of Movie-mood.

What it does

Movie-mood takes a user’s chosen movie and location and uses AI-generated suggestions to curate a list of local places and activities that align with the mood, style, and key scenes of the movie. It transforms travel planning into a cinematic adventure.

How we built it

We built the frontend using React and Tailwind CSS for a responsive, modern user interface. The backend leverages the Perplexity API to generate detailed and personalized itinerary suggestions. We integrated the APIs seamlessly, ensuring a smooth user experience from movie selection to itinerary generation.

Challenges we ran into

Generating creative yet relevant suggestions was a challenge. Fine-tuning the prompt sent to the Perplexity API and formatting the results required multiple iterations to get the balance between fun and functionality right. Working under the tight timeline of the Perplexity Hackathon also challenged us to prioritize core features and keep development focused.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

  • Successfully integrated AI-generated itineraries with a user-friendly interface.
  • Created a fun, engaging experience that transforms travel into a cinematic journey.
  • Learned how to balance creativity and practicality in a technical project.

What we learned

We gained hands-on experience with Perplexity’s API, learned to craft effective prompts for natural language processing, and honed our frontend development skills with React and Tailwind CSS. This project reinforced the importance of user experience and iterative development under time constraints.

What’s next for Movie-mood

We plan to expand the platform to support more movies, genres, and locations, improve the AI’s context sensitivity, and enhance the visual design. We also aim to introduce user accounts and saved itineraries for a more personalized experience.
