Inspiration
20% of US adults have mental issues (45 million), but only 41% of them received mental health services last year, and many of them are trying to solve their issues by their own.
”Сrazy”: "People who go to counseling are crazy, but they are not crazy!”. They are ready to be engaged in self-therapy.
Cost: 1-hour offline session / $150 - so expensive
TV watching time: On average, American adults are watching TV 5 hours per day. Many of them think that they wasting time.
Our idea to create a new habit and unite Entertainment + Therapy in one platform where a user can receive benefits by watching movies.
Cinematherapy helps clients talk about their problems, elicit deep feelings and help us reflect on our lives. 67% of the 827 licensed psychologists surveyed reported using popular movies to promote treatment gains and 88% reported effective outcomes as a result.
What it does
It helps ordinary users and users with mental illnesses analyze their thoughts and feelings, do self-reflection after the film, chat with couches and therapists online with the lowest price than in offline session.
By asking questions about user mood and area of mental challenges the service is building a recommendation system of a movie based on listing developed by Ofer Zur, Ph.D. & Birgit Wolz, Ph.D. MFT. A client is getting link to the movie, watching it and interact with different emotions. After that, we recommend to discuss it after with counselor, find a community of peers that experienced the same challenges or work on guided self-reflection.
This service is for people who search for a solution to their problem and therapists who want to try a new technique. Clients learn to watch movies consciously and reflectively and to pay attention to the story and to themselves. They then learn to understand themselves and others more objectively in the big “movie” of their lives. We are forcing movie industry and content creators to make films with a healing effect and mental health impact
How I built it
- Made market and UX researches,
- Made app UX architecture,
- Designed interface,
- Developed back-end with recommendation algorithms, developed front-end
- Did tests in production
For MVP we gathered recommendations from existing online resource: https://www.zurinstitute.com/movie-therapy/ using BeautifulSoup, created hard-coded content-based recommender with python + Flask, Created user-movie recommendation database to be updated and mined by hybrid recommender for improved recommendations with use + feedback.
Challenges I ran into
We created the team from the ground up, found Data Analyst, Front-end developer, UX/UI designer, and we are Technical Product Owner, Growth Marketing Manager.
We made research about Movie Therapy and Mental health industry in general, talked with mentors for validating the idea and find relevant insights.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Researched and validated good idea :) Frontend team learned Flow typechecking and Tabler-React Technical Product Owner, Growth Marketing Manager - created a process of product development, pitch, research and etc.
What's next for Movie Mirror
We plan to build MVP for production release, test it with therapists and clients, and in the future get the additional value to a therapist during the session, optimize the price of a session with therapist online.
