Inspiration
We are two brothers, Marc and Albert, passionate about health and technology. Together we created Hábitos Vitales, a Spanish-speaking platform with a weekly newsletter and an Instagram community of more than 300,000 people. Our mission is to share evidence-based health strategies, focusing on the Pareto principle—the 20% of actions that bring 80% of results.
Through Hábitos Vitales, we discovered a recurring challenge: people spend hours sitting and endlessly scrolling, even though they know it affects their health and productivity. That inspired us to build a tool that not only blocks distractions but also encourages healthy movement.
What it does
MoveGate helps users stay focused and active. It allows them to choose which apps to block and set time ranges for restriction. When they try to open a blocked app, a movement challenge (like push-ups or squats) appears. Completing the activity unlocks the app for a few minutes.
In short: screen time becomes a reward for movement, not a passive habit.
How we built it
We developed MoveGate for iOS using:
- SwiftUI for a modern and adaptive interface.
- SwiftData for local persistence.
- FamilyControls and DeviceActivity APIs to manage app blocking.
- VisionKit to detect and validate exercises.
- RevenueCat to handle subscriptions and premium features.
Challenges we ran into
- Designing an experience that motivates without feeling restrictive.
- Combining productivity and health features in a simple, engaging flow.
- Managing iOS restrictions while preserving user privacy.
- Ensuring that exercise detection is reliable but not frustrating for the user.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Building a tool that directly extends the mission of Hábitos Vitales into daily life.
- Creating an innovative way to fight both sedentary behavior and digital distraction at once.
- Growing from content creators into app developers with a functional product ready for real impact.
What we learned
- People are more engaged when rewards are tied to meaningful actions rather than punishment.
- Small, consistent breaks of movement can significantly improve health and focus.
- Combining evidence-based health principles with technology creates practical and lasting change.
What's next for MoveGate – Focus & Health
- Expanding the library of movement challenges and personalizing them to user fitness levels.
- Adding progress tracking and habit-building features.
- Localizing the app into Spanish and English to reach a wider audience.
- Continuing to grow MoveGate as part of Hábitos Vitales, helping more people move, focus, and live healthier lives.
