Project: SleepWise – Smarter Sleep for Busy Lives

by Mouth Breathers United

Inspiration

Singaporeans are some of the most sleep-deprived people in the world, often sacrificing rest due to work stress, academic pressure, and always-on lifestyles. We realized that while many sleep apps focus on meditation or white noise, few tackle the real triggers of poor sleep: unfinished tasks, anxious thoughts, and tomorrow’s workload. That’s where SleepWise was born.

What it does

SleepWise is a mobile app that helps users wind down and sleep better by:

  • Smart Task Digest: Summarizing tomorrow’s top 3 calendar events to reduce uncertainty.
  • Stress Offloading Ritual: Allowing users to brain-dump worries and receive an AI-powered positive reframe.
  • Bedtime Nudges: Personalised reminders to start winding down, based on tomorrow’s earliest commitments and desired sleep hours.

How we built it

  • Frontend: Built with React Native + Expo for cross-platform development.
  • Backend: Node.js with Express, handling AI reframing requests and push notification scheduling.
  • APIs: Google Calendar API for event integration; OpenAI API for cognitive reframing.
  • Database: Firestore to store user journals, nudges, and settings.
  • Notifications: Expo Notifications + server-side cron jobs to send timely bedtime nudges.

Challenges we ran into

  • Handling Google OAuth securely in a hackathon timeframe.
  • Balancing simplicity with usefulness—many sleep apps overpromise, so we focused on an MVP.
  • Managing notification reliability across iOS and Android.
  • Timeboxing AI prompt engineering so reframes are concise, calming, and non-medical.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a working MVP in under 48 hours that integrates calendar, AI, and notifications.
  • Designed a unique blend of productivity + wellbeing, not just another meditation app.
  • Successfully implemented cross-platform push notifications with personalized bedtime computation.
  • Received positive feedback in user testing—people said “this feels like my personal sleep coach.”

What we learned

  • Sleep problems are as much psychological as they are physical.
  • Integrating multiple APIs is tough but incredibly rewarding when everything clicks.
  • The power of AI reframing—short, positive nudges can genuinely change the way users view stress.
  • Teamwork under pressure—balancing software strengths while learning new tools on the fly.

What's next for Mouth Breathers United

  • Smarter personalization: Learn from users’ sleep/wake patterns to adjust nudges dynamically.
  • Gamification: Streaks and rewards for consistent sleep hygiene.
  • Social layer: Optional “sleep squads” for accountability among friends or family.
  • Partnerships: Collaborate with schools and workplaces to reduce burnout through better sleep habits.
  • Launch pilot in Singapore, then scale regionally where sleep deprivation is also widespread.
