Inspiration

According to the National Survey 2005 data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation, there are 3.4 million wheelchair users in the United States, with an additional 10 million using walking aids, such as a cane or walker. Despite the prominence of wheelchair users in the United States, a March 2017 survey of 554 Americans living with disabilities concluded that 20 percent of those individuals encounter a barrier to a building, a service, or transportation at least once per day and nearly 12 percent say it happens multiple times in a day. These wheelchair users often do not know which public locations, such as restaurants, hotels, and senior centers are wheelchair accessible. On the other hand, many of these public locations do not publicly post information regarding the wheelchair accessibility of their location.

What it does

Motum is a comprehensive resource for wheelchair users to easily find and navigate wheelchair-accessible locations. We offer multiple free services through our mobile application, including personalized navigation and recommendation tools intended to make navigation convenient. Once underway, we will expand our scope beyond our base in the San Francisco Bay Area and leverage our existing labor force to advertise our mobile application to wheelchair users throughout the United States. As we grow, our company strives to partner with restaurants, hotels, senior centers, schools, and more wheelchair foundations nationwide to provide an approachable, cost-effective, and accurate guide detailing each location’s wheelchair-accessible features. Within three years, founders Shivali Gulati and Trishala Jain intend to create the United States’ premier social enterprise for wheelchair user navigation and bring awareness to the necessity of wheelchair accessible locations.
