Inspiration
"Daddy, can you put your phone down?"
Should be the type of question you only hear once before you light your phone on fire and launch it into the stratosphere. Unfortunately, this glowing slab sucks me in and drowns me, day after day. How many times do I have to die to drowning before I learn to f*#king put it down?
I don't want to lose special moments with my children to a really smart rock and fake internet people.
So I set out to quantify the time I spent on my phone. "How about pushups for screen time?"
What it does
Motive adds a cost to your scrolling addiction. Choose the apps you want to put behind earned exercise. Then get your reps in to use those apps.
Let's say you choose TikTok and Instagram. And you're bold, and say "Three pushups should equal one minute of screentime" - you're off to the races. Hope you enjoy pushups. Or I hope you enjoy saying bye to scrolling.
How we built it
Codex is the star here.
Seriously, I've only read the code once, but coached Codex extensively through the design and function as I personally tested Motive for over a month.
I'm an iOS developer and had the benefit of knowing roughly what Apple APIs exist to continously point Codex toward the right solutions if it hit phantom dead-ends, but really, apps like this are so easily copyable.
What makes the difference is how much you care. For this one, it's a lot.
- I took tons of time designing it simply
- I use it daily, and feed my notes back into Codex
- I had lots of family and friends try it before launch
- I want others to see their Screen Time drop, too, so it's not even a subscription. It's a one-time purchase.
What's next for Motive - Exercise to Scroll
HealthKit integration. Right now, you can only track exercises done right within the app, but I have plans to make it so that workouts recorded elsewhere and saved in Health can also count toward app usage.
