Inspiration
This project was born from the universally relatable, comedic tension of family holiday planning. Inspired by my own experiences growing up of organizing Mother's Day, I wanted to test the capabilities of AI video platforms to capture the nuanced timing and subtle expressions of television comedy. The film served as a creative outlet for me to explore a familiar dynamic, using ChatGPT to extrapolate the script and assisting me how to direct Kling AI on how to prompt character expressions, before final assembly in DaVinci Resolve.
What it accomplishes
This short film stands as a benchmark for what was achievable with generative AI video tools around May 2025. It demonstrates that an independent creator, without a professional cinematography or writing background, could produce a cohesive, narrative-driven short episode. It showcases the power of combining multiple AI platforms to move from a simple concept to a finished comedic skit.
How we built it
Scripting & Prompts: ChatGPT & Claude AI Video Generation: Kling AI Image Creation & Consistency: Freepik: Flux Ai and Character Consistency Image Editor through Freepik. I also made one of the Characters through CharacterCreator Program. Voice Generation: ElevenLabs Audio & SFX: Epidemic Sound Final Assembly & Editing: DaVinci Resolve
Challenges we ran into
Challenge: Visual Inconsistency. AI-generated clips had shifting lighting and color. Solution: I generated multiple shots from a single source image, prompting only for different facial expressions. This created a consistent look and feel, simulating a single, continuous take. Challenge: Poor Action Adherence. The AI struggled to follow directional prompts (e.g., "enter from left") and would often generate incorrect character actions. Solution: This required extensive trial-and-error, refining prompts, and re-rendering scenes until the desired performance was achieved. I sometimes cut one part of one prompt video and spliced it together with the last part of another one.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
My greatest accomplishment was successfully translating a written script into a visually coherent comedy skit that followed a clear narrative. I am particularly proud of the lip-syncing, which I meticulously timed to appear natural and believable—a significant challenge for AI video models of that period. While I used AI for scripting, the scene-by-scene visualization and shot direction were my own, a process that proved far more complex and rewarding than anticipated. The result is a video that, to the casual viewer, feels authentic and real.
What we learned
This project was a deep dive into the iterative process of AI creation. It taught me patience, resource management, and the art of crafting precise prompts to achieve a desired outcome. Most importantly, it provided a front-row seat to the rapid evolution of AI video platforms, observing tangible improvements in instructional adherence and consistency in a very short time.
What's next for Mother's Day Hustle
As a passionate creator, I plan to continue exploring the intersection of AI and comedy. My goal is to keep producing short, narrative-driven videos that push the boundaries of what's possible with these incredible tools.
