Inspiration

Postpartum complications can become serious when warning signs are not recognized early. We wanted to create a simple solution that helps new mothers recognize important warning signs and understand when they should seek medical help.

What it does

MotherGuard is a postpartum safety concept with a short symptom check-in. It focuses on warning signs such as heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, and dizziness.

A simple rule-based system gives a risk level:

  • Green — continue monitoring
  • Yellow — contact a healthcare professional
  • Red — seek urgent medical care

MotherGuard does not diagnose or replace doctors. It helps connect a warning sign with the right next step.

How we built it

For Phase 1, we designed the solution around a simple prototype flow using symptom inputs and rule-based logic. The goal is to keep the first version realistic and easy to use.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was balancing an impactful healthcare idea with what can realistically be developed as a student prototype. We therefore kept the first version simple instead of depending on complex hospital or blood-bank integrations.

What we learned

We learned that a good healthcare technology solution should be useful, simple, and safe. Technology should support people in getting appropriate care rather than trying to replace healthcare professionals.

What's next for MotherGuard

The next step is to build and test the basic working prototype, then improve it through feedback from users and healthcare professionals.
