Inspiration
Motchi is inspired by the 1996 game Tamagotchi -- a game where people got to play with and bond over virtual pets. We wanted to use that game functionality with the added aspect of couple match making in the form of pet bonding.
What it does
Our game has a home screen with a pet button, shop button,. When you click the pet, you can interact with it and it’ll give you feedback based on its current state – health, happiness, and hunger. You have to make sure to take care of your pet to ensure that it doesn’t die. You can take care of your pet
How we built it
We built it using React + Vite and Typescript for the front end because React is component-based, and its architecture allows for easy maintenance. Additionally, we used Golang for the backend as well as a Sqlite database to store our User and Pet entities.
Challenges we ran into
We felt like we needed more time to make our project better so for the most part our game is static and we weren’t able to add the couple pet bonding feature to our game. There were also a lot of bugs in our code so we had to spend a lot of time debugging them which took away from time that could’ve been used to
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The minigame is fully interactive and allows you to control your pet and earn coins. Also, our sprite designs turned out really well, which gives our website a more vibrant videogame feel.
What we learned
This was the first Hackathon for all three of us and we each have expertise in different areas or software development. There was definitely a small learning curve but it taught us how working in a software development team is all about collaboration. Not everyone is going to come in with the same level of knowledge and background but everyone has something unique to bring to the table.
What's next for Motchi
We want to add the couple pet bonding feature and add a way to search for another person's profile.
