Inspiration

I am always inspired by nature and plants in my art. Nature has always been my safe space and my lifeline, and this character was my love of nature wrapped up into one person. I wanted to convey joy, life, and the ever existing presence of nature in my life.

What it does

My work's purpose was to fully explore this character's look and energy. I decided to do a full character study and explore her different outfits throughout the story I have placed her in. The overarching story of this character is the strength in yourself and your ability to overcome traumas and hardships, in the same way nature does.

How we built it

I was heavily inspired by a lot of my favorite artists working in the industry: Carles Dalmau, guywhodoesart to name a couple, I wanted to explore a more 'cartoon' style of drawing since I began as a graphite artist. I looked at different references of fantasy clothing and renaissance faire attire to piece together her outfit, I drew inspiration from tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons to decide on her druid-like appearance.

Challenges we ran into

While creating this character I was struggling with my personal art style, and trying piece together my favorite motifs of digital art today, into something that was my own and that I could be proud of. There are several iterations of this character as shown in my work, but Moss's full body illustration felt like the last puzzle piece.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am very proud and very honored to have been selected as a finalist for JoyArt!

What we learned

I have learned to do what you love, and step outside the box. I am just so happy I was able to combine two things I love so much and create something amazing from it.

What's next for Moss Character Concept Art

I will continue working on this character and eventually make a full 2D animation test.
