Inspiration

I bought a water rower and made a rule: my favorite shows only while rowing. It actually worked. Then I thought, I love podcasts, but I don't walk enough or get enough sun. So why not do the same thing: podcasts only while walking? I kept cheating though, so I built an app that does it for me. It plays when I walk and pauses when I stop. That's Mosey.

What it does

Mosey is a podcast player that only plays while you walk. Put your phone in your pocket, start walking, and the episode plays. Stop, and it pauses. The free version does this forever. Pro adds playlists, a custom pause delay (so a red light doesn't cut off your episode), animated Stepprints you can share, and insights about your walks. The pricing is the part I like most. The more miles you walk, the cheaper your yearly plan gets. At 25, 75, 200, and 500 miles it drops, from $59.99 all the way down to $19.99. So basically, you walk more, you pay less. Also, no GPS and no location permission. Mosey only knows if you're moving, not where you are.

How we built it

Just me, with Kotlin Multiplatform and Compose Multiplatform. One codebase for iOS and Android, with native code for motion detection and audio on each platform. RevenueCat handles all the subscription stuff, including the walk-based discount tiers. I designed everything before coding: the screens, App Store screenshots, landing page, and share cards.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest part was iOS background audio. When you walk, you stop and start all the time, and getting audio to pause and resume instantly without iOS killing the session took some time to get it right. Detecting walking without was tricky too because it had to feel natural, not jumpy. And how long should it wait before pausing? Too short is annoying, too long doesn't make sense. So I made it a setting.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A pricing model that rewards you for using the app instead of charging you more. Shipping a polished app on both platforms, solo. No location access at all. The progress artwork. Every walk gets its own little piece of art.

What we learned

Pairing something you love with something you should do works way better than streaks and reminders. Pricing can be part of the product, not just a number on the paywall. Cross-platform gets you far, but audio still needs native work.

What's next for Mosey: Walking Podcast Player

Walking together with friends, Apple Health and Health Connect sync, better long-term insights, and then the public launch on both stores.
