Inspiration
In many parts of the world, especially rural areas, burn and acid attack survivors struggle with both physical trauma and social stigma. Current reconstruction options are donor-dependent, unaffordable, or inaccessible. We wanted to build a solution that restores dignity, confidence, and hope — using technology for social good.
What it does
Morphos is an AI-powered system that creates customized, donor-free 3D printed facial prosthetic masks. Using just a single old photo or scan, AI reconstructs the patient’s original face, ensures anatomical accuracy, and generates a printable model. Surgeons then fuse the biocompatible mask onto the patient’s face — providing an affordable, ethical, and life-changing alternative to donor transplants.
How we built it
We designed Morphos as a multidisciplinary workflow combining AI, biomedical engineering, material science, and surgical expertise.
AI Reconstruction: Diffusion models restore missing features, FLAME ensures structural accuracy, Gaussian splatting enables real-time previews, and NeRF helps simulate expressions.
3D Printing: CAD models are refined and printed with biocompatible, skin-safe materials like medical-grade silicone or TPU.
Surgical Integration: Surgeons align and fuse the mask with patient tissues using grafting techniques.
Feedback Loops: Both patient input and surgeon oversight refine comfort, aesthetics, and safety.
Challenges we ran into
Reconstructing realistic faces from limited photo data.
Finding affordable, skin-safe materials that mimic real tissue.
Ensuring seamless surgical integration and hospital adoption.
Balancing cutting-edge AI with accessibility for rural healthcare.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Designing a complete end-to-end pipeline from AI reconstruction to 3D printed prosthetics.
Creating an ethical, donor-free alternative to face transplants.
Building a solution with potential global impact for underprivileged survivors.
What we learned
We learned how combining AI techniques overcomes limitations — diffusion gives realism, FLAME ensures structure, splatting adds interactivity, and NeRF works with minimal data. We also realized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between technologists, surgeons, and patients to achieve real social impact.
What's next for Morphos
Our next steps are to build functional prototypes, validate them on synthetic models, and partner with hospitals for pilot trials. We aim to seek regulatory approvals, optimize costs for rural deployment, and collaborate with public health programs so that every survivor who needs Morphos can access it.
