Inspiration

Our team wanted to build an app for commuters who may be rushing for their commute, and want a quick overview about the weather and traffic routes. We got this inspiration from some our team members who find commuting to UCR troublesome.

What it does

This mobile app allows the user to set their location and daily destination, and the mobile app will be able to recommend the most optimal route. This provides an easier and quicker way for commuters to figure out which route to take without having to input the address on a map app.

How we built it

We built the UI using React Native using Nativewind to stylize some of the components. We also used Google Cloud, using the Places API and Directions API to fetch the ETA of each route and retrieve the cities. We also developed our mobile application using Expo.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was setting up React Native since we were fairly unfamiliar with the tech stack. Most of our experience comes from web development, so the learning curve is tricky. We also have some difficulties passing around data between screens.

Accomplishments that we're proud of & What we learned

We learned how to build apps using React Native and NativeWind.

What's next for MorningBird

We plan on adding more commuter functionality such as implementing weather API, adding multiple destinations, and reminders functionality. We also wanted to add a push-notification or widget functionality for iOS devices.
