Inspiration

As one of our members had personal experience working with Morgan and Morgan and knowing how difficult the commands of a case can be, our team decided to pursue the Morgan and Morgan challenge in making a virtual legal assistant. In fact, we even functionally used the code to explain his old legal documents from the case. Knowing that this project could make a difference for people like our teammate drove us to work almost nonstop to make the legal process more accessible.

What it does

Our project acts as a virtual legal AI assistant interface, which allows the user to choose between multiple functions. One function is that the assistant can provide help understand any questions about the legal system and Morgan and Morgan. The machine allows the user to upload and view pdf documents. Then, these documents can be accessed by the interface with AI in order to provide a summary of the document to the user. Also, the user can fully interact with the pdf by asking specific questions.

How we built it

The project uses a variety of features.

Challenges we ran into

This hackathon had many challenges for our group. Perhaps most prominently, on our first night here at UCF, one of our team members (of a 3-member team) had a medical emergency. Taking care of this situation took over 3 hours. This was a recurrent issue. API keys being leaked was also a large issue for our team, eating up precious time and energy. Also, being our first hackathon, we ran into countless errors before we could start to tackle the programming aspects. From syncing language versions to installing the correct modules, our team learned an immense amount from tackling our obstacles.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is our first hackathon. Being our first, we are proud to have persevered through a repeating medical emergency. We are now able to present a finished project which we are content with. This project has practical application in the legal system, as our team member knows well from personal experience. We are proud to potentially make a difference one day in the legal system with this project.

What we learned

We learned how to use APIs as well as many, many new modules. We learned how to communicate and work together on code.

What's next for Morgan and Morgan Virtual Legal Assistant

The Morgan and Morgan Virtual Legal Assistant is planned to be updated with a front-end integration for the feature of asking questions about the specific document. This is currently limited to the terminal, but will be expanded to be more accessible in the near future. Also, parsing methods for the future will be improved, specifically on the summarize feature; it is planned to also add different options for lengths of summaries.
