Inspiration

We were inspired by More Than Word’s mission to empower youth and emphasis on career and educational opportunities. This project involved both technical and design elements, giving us the freedom for expression through art and technology.

What it does

Our three step revitalization plan for More Than Words involves revised donation drive packets, eco-conscious book carts, and a Student Ambassador Program. Donation Drive Packets: a modern, sleek design with hyperlinks streamlines the donation drive experience for hosts, which will encourage more communities to take action. Eco-Conscious Book Carts: Sustainably sourced second-hand book carts, with our artistic vinyl decals, will elevate More Than Words’ book carts, making them alluring and eye-catching. Student Ambassador Program: Through collaborations with students across the greater Boston area, More Than Words can develop a powerful student network. Student ambassadors can be in charge of events such as reading workshops and donation drives at their university, which increases available resources to More Than Words. Once our plan is implemented, More Than Words will have the resources to expand their impact on youth advocacy and development through our ** “Unlock Potential”** book carts.

How we built it

The reimagined donation drive packets and flyers were created using Canva. The physical model was designed with Rhino and laser-printed on hardwood. The “Unlock Potential” prototype as well as its animation was built on a program called Blender, a free 3D creation suite.

Challenges we ran into

It was difficult to implement an anti-theft aspect to the Unlock Potential” prototype and be within budget but we overcame this challenge through our 3D design features. Blender is a complex program, so it was difficult to add certain aesthetic and functional features. For example, a clear, weatherproof door so individuals can still see the books inside the cart. A lot of time and effort was put into exploring Blender tools in order to make the best design for More Than Words.

We tried to get a prototype of the entire but due to time constraints, we were unable to get a full 3D print and laser print. If we had more time, we would be able to print the entire prototype to show a real model of how the cart would function.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Rendering an awesome animation of our “Unlock Potential” prototype was a huge accomplishment. This way, More Than Words can get a realistic view of how this prototype can be applied in the real world. We are very proud of our final revitalization plan, and strongly believe that this will expand More Than Words’ social enterprise of youth advocates.

What's next for More Than Words Reimagined

** “Unlock Potential”** book carts feature an exterior chalkboard canvas, where kids and artists draw stories on the go. The top of the cart is adorned with clay book sculptures, additional artistic touches showing that grabs attention. The durable wheels ensure accessibility for easy transport by young helpers. The lock system protects donations, freeing focus for our mission of advocacy and empowerment. The weather-resistant enclosed case also safeguards books, sustaining longevity for the cart and books.
