Inspiration
The 1st pain point provided by More Than Words described their difficulties relying their message using their current book carts. They were seeking an update to their carts that would increase brand awareness while still serving their primary function, providing books all over the local area. Another struggle was how to convey the purpose of their carts and its specifications to potential hosts. So, it was our mission to develop a system where hosts could easily imagine book carts in their spaces and continue the good work of More Than Words.
What it does
Our 3D model provides an indepth understanding of exactly what the book carts look like from every angle. Additionally, our creation of an AR platform (Augmented Reality) brings this model into the real life settings in which these carts would exist -- like a corporate office or cafe. These innovations are located on our website mock up, created on ArcGIS story maps, that can easily be added to More Than Words' pre-existing webpage. Finally, we created unique decals, bookmarks, and stickers as another marketing tool. These are a sustainable way to continue using the old carts while also being used on new carts and in all More Than Words locations.
How we built it
We used Blender to create a 3-D rendering of the cart, and then used OverlyApp to design an AR environment that potential clients could use to place the book cart in their space. Using Canva, we created bookmarks and stickers that would be available to people who purchased books on the cart. Decals were also developed using Canva, which can be affixed to the sides of any cart to provide additional context for the non-profit.
Challenges we ran into
In the development of the 3D book cart model, we faced a number of challenges. Blender proved to be tricky to master, with correcting the texture of the creation as well as animation functions posing a challenge. More importantly, without the Blender model completed, it was difficult to move forward in future phases of our project, making it difficult to synchronize our work timelines.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The successful completion of the 3D model was a particular point of pride, since it took the majority of our time to complete. We were very happy with how it turned out, and that work made it easier to integrate the rendering into our AR software. The website design brought everything together seamlessly, incorporating all of our hard work in way that was visually appealing and in line with the More Than Words brand.
What we learned
This was an incredibly challenging yet rewarding process, and we learned a great deal about working under pressure and adapting to a constantly changing situation. We also learned how to leverage our existing resources to create the best end product possible.
