Inspiration
Inspired by those fold-the-paper IQ test puzzles, origami, and Wordle. Foldably takes the "picture the paper once it's folded" brain-teaser and turns it into a daily puzzle. Same sheet for everyone, one shot to beat par, a streak to protect.
What it does
Foldably is a daily paper-folding puzzle inside a Reddit post. You get a painted sheet and a card showing the target. Fold the sheet until the top matches, in par folds or fewer. Flaps flip when they fold, so colors mirror and stack, and you can't just eyeball it.
Three sheets drop every midnight UTC, same for everyone. A 4x4 warmup, the main 6x6 daily, and an 8x8 master locked until you clear the daily. Solve the daily and your streak lives another day.
Every sheet has its own leaderboard ranked by fewest folds, then fastest time. You can post your result to the comments as folds, time, and direction arrows, never the solution. And you can build your own. Paint a pattern, hit Scramble to unfold it, name it, publish. Now it's a post of its own in a community queue people play and vote on.
How we built it
Devvit Web, Phaser 3, a Hono server on Redis, and a fold engine that treats every cell as a stack of layers. Levels are generated backwards from the answer, and the server replays every submitted solution before it counts. Zero image or audio files. The paper, tape, clips, and sounds are all generated at runtime from one 10KB font.
Challenges we ran into
Generating puzzles that are always solvable was the hard part. Building levels backwards leaked at first, with hidden cells surfacing junk after a later fold. We fixed it by painting every cell the color of where it lands, then simulating the full fold sequence with tracker tokens to prove which cells stay hidden. A bounded search confirms par is really the fewest folds possible. On top of that the server trusts nothing, so it never ships the solution, replays your folds against the real puzzle, and times you off its own clock.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Every puzzle is solvable by construction and the server can prove it, so you'll never open an impossible daily. The whole game is procedural, one font is the entire art budget, and the fold animation still makes me want to keep folding.
What we learned
First time doing this much server-authoritative logic, and it taught me a lot about not trusting the client. Also, read the actual type definitions on platform APIs instead of guessing. And playtesters catch things no test suite will.
What's next for Foldably
A proper landscape layout for desktop. An unfold-style undo animation. Weekly themed sheets with bigger boards and restricted fold directions. Profile flair when your streak hits the crane tiers. And a monthly tournament built from the best community puzzles.
