Inspiration
Moonbridge was inspired by an Apple accessibility event that opened my eyes to the importance of inclusive design and got me thinking about how I could contribute. I chose Singapore Sign Language (SGSL) as my accessibility topic and joined the SP Sign Language Club to explore it further. But with other commitments, I couldn’t attend most of the lessons and even now, I still struggle to remember or sign anything confidently. That’s when I realized what I needed most: something to help me learn at my own pace. Since I usually rely on flashcards to remember things, I decided to build a digital flashcard tool for SGSL and that became Moonbridge.
What it does
The current Moonbridge MVP is a static web-based platform that introduces users to SGSL through a simple, clean interface. It features: An About section explaining the purpose of the platform A Sign Gallery showcasing basic signs (currently with placeholder images) A planned features section hinting at the full future vision
How we built it
Moonbridge was built using: HTML and CSS for the static content and styling Placeholder images were used temporarily to represent SGSL signs JavaScript is not included yet, as the interactive elements are planned for future phases when time and skills permit.
Challenges I ran into
Time constraints due to multiple commitments (e.g., School Club duties) Limited JavaScript skills made it hard to implement interactive elements Sourcing or creating accurate SGSL sign assets in a respectful and verified way posed ethical concerns Difficulty balancing the big-picture vision with a realistic MVP timeline
Accomplishments that i'm proud of
A polished and structured MVP that clearly communicates the project’s purpose A thoughtful future plan that reflects care, research, and ambition Completing this while managing multiple other commitments
What we learned
Building even a simple web project requires scope management and focus It’s okay to pause a big project if it helps preserve your motivation and vision Communicating your vision clearly (even without full functionality) still adds great value
What's next for Moonbridge
Moonbridge will be paused after this MVP submission but the vision continues. In future phases, I plan to: Add interactive flashcards and quizzes using JavaScript Develop a mobile app version for learning on the go Incorporate gamification elements like badges and streaks Include SGSL poetry and community contributions Make it an inclusive, respectful, and beautiful space for SGSL exploration
