🌈 Moodverse – India’s AI-Powered Digital Therapy Dost

Inspiration

India is facing a silent mental health crisis. Over 50 million Indian youth struggle with anxiety, stress, and depression, yet therapy is often expensive, stigmatized, and inaccessible, especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 regions.

As students, we saw friends cope through memes, reels, music, and silence instead of professional help. Traditional therapy felt clinical and intimidating, and many young people were afraid to seek help.

This inspired us to build Moodverse — a platform where therapy feels like talking to a trusted dost, not visiting a hospital. Our goal was to make mental health support relatable, affordable, anonymous, and culturally Indian.

What it does

Moodverse is an AI-powered mental wellness platform designed specifically for India’s Gen Z and Millennials.

It:

  • Detects user emotions using privacy-first facial emotion recognition
  • Provides Hinglish AI therapy conversations using CBT, DBT, and mindfulness techniques
  • Offers immersive VR therapy rooms such as a Goan beach and Zen garden
  • Uses Bollywood meme therapy to reduce stigma and boost mood
  • Enables daily journaling, gratitude practice, and mood tracking
  • Supports anonymous peer communities and private video therapy
  • Works largely offline, ensuring complete user privacy

Moodverse transforms therapy into a daily wellness habit, not a last-resort solution.

How we built it

Moodverse was built using a privacy-first, AI-driven architecture.

Tech Stack

  • Frontend: React (Vite), Tailwind CSS, Framer Motion
  • Emotion AI: face-api.js (runs locally on device)
  • Therapy Engine: Rule-based + LLM-assisted CBT/DBT responses
  • VR Therapy: A-Frame + WebXR (mobile-friendly VR)
  • Data Visualization: Chart.js
  • Meme Therapy: Tenor API (Bollywood GIFs)
  • Video Therapy: Jitsi Meet (end-to-end encrypted)
  • Storage: localStorage & IndexedDB (no cloud dependency)

All emotional data is processed on-device, ensuring maximum privacy and trust.

Challenges we ran into

  • Privacy vs Accuracy: Ensuring emotion detection works fully offline
  • Cultural Localization: Making therapy feel Indian, not Western
  • Mental Health Sensitivity: Avoiding trivialization while using memes
  • VR Accessibility: Designing lightweight VR for low-end devices
  • User Engagement: Balancing fun and clinical effectiveness

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

  • Built a fully working AI + VR mental wellness prototype
  • Achieved 100% local data processing for user privacy
  • Created India’s first meme + VR-based therapy experience
  • Designed therapy that feels like a digital dost
  • Successfully showcased Moodverse at EY Techathon 6.0 and Hacksprint 2.0
  • Developed a scalable, impact-driven mental health solution

What we learned

  • Cultural relatability is as important as technology
  • Privacy is non-negotiable in mental health platforms
  • Memes and humor can reduce stigma when used responsibly
  • AI should support empathy, not replace human care
  • Mental health tools work best when they feel safe and human

What’s next for Moodverse

  • Regional language support (Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada)
  • Wearable integration for stress prediction
  • College and NGO partnerships
  • Advanced VR therapy environments
  • IRL wellness kits and institutional wellness programs

Our vision is to make mental wellness accessible to 400M+ Indian youth and normalize therapy as a daily lifestyle practice.
