Inspiration

In the daily grind of Agile sprints and Jira tickets, teams often forget to check in on how they’re feeling. While task tracking is well-established, emotional health tracking is not. We were inspired to bridge this gap by building a tool that encourages emotional transparency and helps identify team burnout patterns — all within the Jira ecosystem.

What it does

MoodBoard allows team members to quickly log their daily mood (Happy, Okay, Meh, Sad, or Stressed) using a simple emoji selector. These moods are stored per project and visualized on a line graph showing emotional trends over time. Project managers and team leads can view mood analytics to gauge overall team well-being and spot burnout early — without leaving Jira.

How we built it

  • Platform: Atlassian Forge
  • Frontend: React + Forge UI
  • Backend: Forge Functions (@forge/api)
  • Data Storage: Forge Storage API (project-scoped)
  • Charting: Chart.js for mood trend visualization

We used Forge’s full-page Jira module to create a seamless in-app experience.

Challenges we ran into

  • Rendering dynamic charts inside Forge’s restricted iframe layout
  • Handling chart lifecycle and state resets between mood submissions
  • Managing and aggregating mood data across dates in a key-value store
  • Debugging visibility issues when deploying on specific Jira sites

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Seamlessly integrated a mood-tracking app into Jira
  • Built a clean, interactive UI using Forge’s limited component set
  • Successfully visualized mood data over time to highlight team sentiment
  • Kept the experience lightweight, intuitive, and secure

What we learned

  • Building with Atlassian Forge, including permissions, storage, and deployment
  • Managing UI reactivity in restricted environments like Forge iframes
  • Designing for empathy and inclusion in team-based tools
  • The importance of emotional check-ins in improving team morale

What's next for MoodBoard: Team Sentiment Tracker for Jira

  • Role-based mood visibility (e.g., anonymous for team leads)
  • Weekly or sprint-level sentiment summaries
  • Integration with Jira issues for mood-based tagging or alerts
  • Export to CSV for HR or management teams
  • Notifications or reminders for daily check-ins

MoodBoard is just the start — we believe team health should be as trackable as team velocity.
