Inspiration
Mental Health When mental health across the globe is becoming a concern, we wanted to develop something to help people take a break from their screens and the stress that come with them.
What it does
We made a device that keeps track of the user's daily mood. The mood is averaged over the last 7 days and is displayed, allowing users to reflect on their recent feelings and thoughts. After the daily input is selected, the product displays an encouraging, positive, or congratulatory message based on the number selected. The scale goes from 0-10, with 0 being the worst day and 10 being the best.
How we built it
We used C++ and the Arduino IDE to program the board. We used the following modules: OLED Display, Buzzer, LED Light, Potentiometer, and Button.
Challenges we ran into
We didn't know anything about Arduinos and had very little knowledge of C++, so the first challenge was learning the basics for both. We had a lot of trouble getting the longer messages to fit on the screen, so we came up with a solution to make the messages scroll through the display instead. The other major problem was getting the potentiometer to scroll through the numbers to allow the selection to take place.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Last year we didn't fully complete the project, and this year we are proud to be turning in a completed project. We are very proud to not only expand on our software skillset but to start from nothing and work/learn with the hardware side.
What we learned
We learned the basics of Arduino uses and expanded upon the basics to combine multiple functions to make our project come to fruition. We learned about each module on the Arduino and the relative syntax needed to make them do what we need. Most importantly we combined our existing software knowledge with our untapped hardware skills to make a fully functional project that isn't just on our computers.
What's next for Mood Tracker
We are thinking about learning more about 3D printing to possibly turn the Arduino modules into an actual product. The other thing that we would improve would be the actual Arduino kit we used. We used a beginner kit with a small display, so in the future, we would invest in a more advanced Arduino kit to enhance the product. Upgrade some of the software functionality to incorporate graphs and charts to make reading the average moods easier and more user-friendly.
