Inspiration
Adebayo is an immigrant from Nigeria, during his first days in America he spent his time recycling plastic bottles to earn cash. The inspiration for this project comes from that. He wanted to make an app to let people become more aware and take advantage of the mass amount of plastic bottles in the neighborhood while also cleaning the environment and making money too.
What it does
MONYC stands for MoneyCycler in NYC. The app takes codes from the recycling machines that are only outputted once you put a plastic bottle in it. The app tallies and keeps track of the money made from your plastic bottle disposals. Which you will eventually be able to cash in your money and send it to your bank account.
How we built it
We used react-native to create the which utilizes javascript and a specific type of CSS and HTML tags.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a lot of problems because we had to learn React Native from scratch, we ran into issues creating the app, how it looks, its functionality, and the install. However, we prevailed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We all learned React Native in under 12 hours, and we managed to actually create a working app with working components. It also is an amazing idea that could actually be utilized in the world to help limit pollution while also paying people for it. We're really proud of that too.
What we learned
We learned a lot about React, React Native, Javascript, and especially teamwork. We worked hard together to make sure the app ran great.
What's next for MONYC
We plan to implement a transfer feature to transfer the funds received from recycling to the bank account. Also, we plan to actually get this working within the community and add a more developed feature to track places where you can find recycling vendors.
