Context

Our group participated in a datathon to analyze crime in Montreal, with the goal of identifying trends and proposing solutions to reduce crime rates in the city. We used a dataset containing information on various types of crimes, including the date, location, and category of each incident. Our analysis focused on identifying patterns and trends in crime rates throughout the year, as well as exploring potential solutions to address these issues.

Findings

After analyzing the data, we found that crime rates in Montreal are generally lowest in the months of February and December, which are holiday months. This could correlate to Valentine’s day and the holiday season, where individuals typically spend time with their loved ones. This can be associated with the idea that a stronger sense of community is possibly related to reduced opportunities for crime.

Proposed Solution

Based on our findings, we proposed a solution to reduce funding for police and increase funding for recreation and community programs. By providing more opportunities for people to engage in positive activities and build connections with their communities, we believe that crime rates could be reduced in the long term.

Limitations

It's important to note that our analysis had some limitations. For example, our dataset did not include information on the income levels of the neighborhoods where crimes occurred, which could have affected crime rates. Additionally, we did not have information on the severity or specificity of each crime, which could have provided a more nuanced understanding of the data. Despite these limitations, we believe that our analysis provides valuable insights into crime trends in Montreal and potential solutions to address them.
