Inspiration
We were inspired by old style arcade games, as well as 'creepypasta' stories about cursed videogames.
What it does
This is a short videogame inspired by retro arcade game aesthetics and gameplay, with horror aspects. In this game the player navigates a monster character to find and attack targets in a maze in several levels.
How we built it
We built the game in Unity. We made an original 8-bit inspired soundtrack and used various pixel art tools to make the graphics.
Challenges we ran into
Figuring out a good movement system and settling on a good idea were the main challenges we had to overcome. Also accepting that we didn't have enough time to add all the things we wanted into the game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're pretty proud of the soundtrack and the story we made.
What we learned
This was our first game jam and for some of us the first game we've ever made to completion. Our main programmer learned how to implement music and sound in Unity and how to code grid based movement. Our sound designer learned how to use a new music making web tool. Our artists learned how to animate with a new web tool and learned to make sprites with a limited color palette.
What's next for MONSTER
After the game jam we plan to add in the levels we had to cut out to make the time for our submission, and possibly expand the game with more mechanics.
