Inspiration The fascination with the transformative power of Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT-2 and GPT-3 inspired me to explore their inner workings. The challenge of building an LLM from scratch, understanding its mechanics, and optimizing it for efficiency was an irresistible learning opportunity. This project was also a chance to delve deeper into AI and NLP while pushing my technical limits.

What it does MONOGPT is a custom-built Large Language Model designed to generate human-like text, complete prompts, and provide coherent responses. It incorporates advanced techniques such as causal self-attention and multi-head attention for context understanding and generates outputs using efficient sampling methods like Top-k and Nucleus Sampling.

How we built it The model was built entirely from scratch with the following steps:

Tokenization: Implemented Byte Pair Encoding (BPE) for efficient vocabulary generation. Model Architecture: Designed 12 Transformer blocks inspired by GPT-2, with token and positional embeddings, multi-head attention, residual connections, layer normalization, and GELU activation. Optimization: Developed a custom loss function, applied gradient clipping, and used attention masking to stabilize training. Training: Leveraged pretrained GPT-2 weights for efficiency and enhanced functionality through fine-tuning experiments. Utilities: Integrated checkpointing workflows for data efficiency and sampling techniques for dynamic text generation. Challenges we ran into Computing resources were a significant bottleneck, as training a GPT-2-like model from scratch requires substantial hardware and financial investment. Efficiently implementing complex techniques like multi-head attention and BPE while maintaining stability during training was a steep learning curve. Debugging and optimizing such a large-scale system with limited resources proved to be both challenging and rewarding.
