Inspiration

When we were brainstorming, we realized that not many of us knew the in's and out's of personal finance and as young women, we did not have a robust economic education. We are not confident with our finances, and as we embark on our professional careers, we wanted to educate ourselves in order to set ourselves up for a successful future. In 2020, there is a lack of economic education aimed at young women. This contributes to the gender wage gap and can lead to financial abuse. Time and time again, we hear these stories but in order to build a better future, change starts with us! Enter Monji!

What it does

Monji is a personal finance website that aims to empower young women to take a hold of their finances and become money-confident! Our chatbot allows people to enter their most pressing questions and receive an answer. What is a roth IRA? Well, Moné, Monji's chatbot, can tell you! Our blog also consolidates helpful resources in a digestible manner in order to decrease confusion. Our tabs: Learn, Save, Grow, provides a menu that caters to your specific needs.

How we built it

We used the Gatsby framework to build a foundation for a SEO-friendly website and provide real-time changes within our localhost. We also utilized TailwindCSS for fast styling. Using Dialogflow, we built our chatbot!

Challenges we ran into

We took on too much, too fast. Not many of us were familiar with Gatsby and that caused a challenge as were trying to create our solution. Although it was fun to learn, it was probably not the best framework to use for a weekend hackathon. We also had issues with Git and Github with the classic merge conflicts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

However, we're proud that we were able to get something running! This has the potential to become a great resource for people and planning it was a good exercise to practice what Monji would value or not within the website.

What we learned

For our next project, we should limit the amount of new technologies used and appoint someone as the 'expert' for each technology used. That way, we can limit our errors. Planning is also extremely important! Although it's fun to jump into the code, we should spend more time on the planning stage that include mockups so we can have something to reference and it limits confusion.

What's next for Monji

Monji will get new features and better branding in order to appeal to young women!
