Inspiration
Mental health disorders and struggles are significant issues that not only plague adults in our society but youth too. Statistically speaking, rates of disorders such as anxiety and depression have skyrocketed by 25% since COVID-19 emerged- illustrating the pure necessity for a website like ours. We were inspired by the sheer number of people who are inflicted by mental health-related disorders and continue to work on ways we can help those struggling.
What It Does
Our website has several admirable features which anyone of any age can use to start the most important journey- taking care of your mental health. Namely, it features a "wellness check-in," which users can complete daily to keep track of their moods, appetite changes, sleep schedules, and attitude throughout long periods of time. It also features another similar aspect, which is an "emotion graph" that people can input their response into every hour or every day (instead of waiting for long-term changes). Additionally, one page of the website has several positive quotes on display, in an effort to inspire users and motivate them to complete their daily tasks. Coupled with this cause, visitors of the website can track their daily goals and create a "to-do list" they can check off and add items to whenever they want to. Lastly, the website includes an integrated Google Calendar that website users can use to include long-term events (examples include visits with their therapists, doctors, or even sporting events/games).
Challenges we ran into
One challenge we ran into was designing the website itself- one key thing that will attract users to keep track of their mental health is an aesthetically appealing UI/UX design. Oftentimes, the HTML/CSS/JavaScript code would not center objects on the screen correctly, or a large chunk of code would get deleted- resulting in time being wasted (also contributing to a less appealing website). In the end, we discovered that planning out the way the website would look (on Figma) prior to actually starting the code would help in the efficiency of code completion.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Neither of us had ever worked on the integration of Google Calendar in HTML/CSS/JS before, which is why its functionality was a really big motivator for us! It took a lot of research and tutorials to learn how to do it effectively, making its overall completion a significant accomplishment.
What we learned
We learned a lot about different CSS features and ways to adjust how things look on the website.
What's next for Monitor Your Mental Health!
We'd love to include a more personalized feature on the website (potentially ways to incorporate data from heart monitors and trackers) so that we can offer on-the-go advice for people struggling with panic attacks and cardiac issues.
