Moniq — Spending, Made Smarter.
Inspiration
College students juggle paychecks, bills, subscriptions and shared expenses. A bank balance alone does not explain what remains after upcoming commitments. Moniq brings those records together and makes the assumptions behind financial decisions visible.
What it does
Moniq is a working student Fintech prototype with nine responsive pages. Optional Gmail authorization uses the official Gmail API with read-only access. Financial alerts become reviewable events, with merchant, amount, date and card details where available. Duplicate and ambiguous messages stay out of the confirmed ledger until resolved. Gmail-derived balances are estimates, not verified bank balances.
The demo uses synthetic records. Confirming a $400 paycheck increases a $10 starting checking balance to $410; a confirmed $15 purchase reduces it to $395. SmartApprove is off by default and applies trusted-sender, authentication, account, category and spending-limit checks with an audit trail. Real Gmail auto-approval requires additional production validation.
Moniq Circles splits expenses equally or by custom amounts and percentages. Personal shares feed budgets, and recorded reimbursements settle balances without becoming income. Circles records bookkeeping; it does not transfer money.
Budgets, subscription reminders, transparent 30-day forecasts, what-if scenarios and savings goals update from confirmed transactions. Student-deal recommendations use explicitly fictional examples rather than verified redeemable offers. The financial assistant answers supported questions from recorded data using local intent matching; it is not an externally hosted language model.
How we built it
React, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind CSS and Recharts power the interface. FastAPI, SQLAlchemy and SQLite maintain the backend ledger using signed integer cents. A scikit-learn TF-IDF and logistic-regression model categorizes descriptions across 11 categories. Independent evaluation reproduced 250/264 correct predictions (94.70%) on synthetic held-out descriptions; this is not a real-bank accuracy claim, and probabilities are uncalibrated. OAuth tokens are encrypted on the backend and excluded from public source and media.
The static-only PWA supports installation, while financial operations require connectivity. Public demonstration mode isolates temporary synthetic visitor data and disables real Gmail access. This remains a hackathon prototype, without production certification, live bank integration or money movement.
Challenges and lessons
Separating cash, credit debt, personal expense shares and repayments prevented misleading balances. Conservative Gmail review and exact-cent ledger calculations mattered as much as classification. Automated tests cover OAuth with mocked responses, accounting, SmartApprove, Circles and browser workflows. The published GitHub Actions workflow passed for commit 7427f7efb8e71210268fe77aa9462c5c8ff0c37d.
What's next
Consented evaluation of bank-specific email formats, licensed bank reconciliation, authenticated persistent hosting, multi-user Circles and verified student-offer feeds are future work.
AI and development disclosure — owner confirmation required before submission
OpenAI Codex assisted implementation, debugging, tests, documentation, presentation and video production. Microsoft Edge neural synthesis provides the demonstration narration. Dependencies and synthetic data/media attribution are documented in ATTRIBUTIONS.md and data/LICENSE.md. This finalization extends the existing published Moniq baseline. The team must accurately identify work preceding the official hacking start, work completed during Hacklanta and each actual member's contribution before submission. Do not claim all work occurred during the event until confirmed.

Follow the README's local setup and synthetic demonstration instructions. No public application deployment is currently claimed. The demo uses synthetic financial records and is available at https://youtu.be/rIDLt9c-UyA. It demonstrates actual application workflows and was checked in a signed-out browser.
