The Problem That Started It All

Financial literacy is the most important life skill that school never teaches. Students spend years learning trigonometry but graduate with zero idea how to save money, what a SIP is, or why their salary disappears by the 15th of every month. By the time they realize this, they've already made expensive mistakes.

We wanted to fix that not with another boring PDF or lecture, but with something students would actually open every day.

What is MoneyQuest?

MoneyQuest is a gamified financial literacy platform for kids, students and young adults aged 16–30. Think Duolingo, but for personal finance. Users progress through levels, earn coins, maintain streaks, and build real money skills through interactive lessons and quizzes, all wrapped in a premium game-like interface.

Free Model — 4 Core Levels

  • Level 0: Introduction to Money — what money really is, active vs passive income, compound interest
  • Level 1: Saving Money — needs vs wants, the 20% rule, building an emergency fund
  • Level 2: Budgeting — the 50/30/20 rule, zero-based budgeting, expense tracking
  • Level 3: Smart Spending — the 24-hour rule, lifestyle inflation, opportunity cost

Premium Model — 5 Money Languages

Each investment instrument is treated like a programming language to learn:

  • SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) — with live return simulator
  • Mutual Funds — types, expense ratios, platforms
  • Stocks — P/E ratio, EPS, virtual trading with ₹10,000 of practice cash
  • Crypto — risk management, Indian tax rules (30% flat)
  • Banking — FD, RD, savings account laddering

Virtual Bank 🏦

A virtual bank account for children where they record pocket money, gifts, and earnings. They create Savings Jars for specific goals (bicycle, gaming setup, trip), track spending by category, and watch their savings rate grow, teaching real habits from childhood.

AI Financial Advisor 🤖

An intelligent chatbot that gives personalized investment advice. Ask "I have ₹5000, where should I invest?" and receive a smart allocation breakdown with risk levels, percentage splits, and plain-language reasoning — tailored to your financial situation.

Virtual Stock Market 📈

Practice trading with ₹10,000 of virtual cash using real Indian stocks — Reliance, TCS, HDFC Bank, Infosys, Nifty 50. Learn to buy, sell, track P&L, and understand portfolio diversification with zero real risk.

Streak & Badge System 🔥

Daily learning streaks with a 30-day activity calendar. Milestone rewards at 3, 7, 14, 30, 60, and 100-day streaks. 12 unlockable badges from "First Steps" to "Diamond Hands." Leaderboard to compete with friends.

How We Built It

MoneyQuest is a pure frontend web application — no framework, no build tools, just clean HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript organised into a modular multi-file architecture:

  • css/style.css — full design system with CSS custom properties (tokens), animations, and component styles
  • js/core.js — state engine with localStorage persistence, game logic, bank functions, investment calculators
  • js/ui.js — reusable component library: modals, toasts, cards, simulators, chat bubbles
  • js/pages.js — all 9 page rendering functions
  • js/app.js — router, event system, boot sequence

The design system is built around a "Dark Trading Floor meets Video Game" aesthetic — deep ink backgrounds, warm amber as the primary brand colour, Bebas Neue for display text, JetBrains Mono for numbers, and DM Sans for body copy.

The Challenge We Faced

The hardest part was making financial concepts genuinely engaging without dumbing them down. Every lesson had to be short enough to read in 60 seconds, accurate enough to actually teach something, and rewarding enough to make users come back tomorrow. Finding that balance across 4 levels, 5 modules, and an AI advisor required many iterations.

The Kids Bank feature also required rethinking UX from scratch — the interface needed to work for a 10-year-old and a 25-year-old at the same time.

What We Learned

  • Financial literacy is not a content problem — it's a motivation problem. Give people a streak to protect and coins to earn, and they will read about mutual funds willingly.
  • Gamification works best when the rewards feel earned. Random coins feel hollow; coins tied to real quiz performance feel meaningful.
  • The best financial advice is specific. "Save more money" changes nothing. "Put ₹500 into a Nifty 50 SIP on Groww before this Friday" changes behaviour.

Impact

MoneyQuest addresses a genuine global gap. Financial illiteracy costs individuals lakhs in bad decisions and costs economies trillions in lost productivity. By making financial education as engaging as a mobile game, MoneyQuest can reach students who would never pick up a finance book — and give them the skills to make better decisions for the rest of their lives.
