Inspiration
Moving to a new country made me realize how difficult it can be to manage money across borders. When I arrived in the US, I experienced the challenges of dealing with currency exchange and access to essential services. I also realized that managing money becomes more complicated when your income, bills, savings, and family responsibilities are spread across two countries.
Most financial apps help you track what you have already spent, while money-transfer apps focus on moving money. But before sending money home or making a major purchase, people need to know one important thing: Can I afford this and still cover my upcoming expenses?
That question inspired us to build MoneyOS.
What We Built
MoneyOS is an AI-powered financial management concept that brings financial planning and cross-border money decisions together.
Users can ask questions in plain language, such as, "Can I send $500 to my family in India this week and still cover rent?"
MoneyOS combines account balances, upcoming bills, subscriptions, transfer fees, and exchange rates to calculate how much money may be safely spent or sent. It also explains how it arrived at the answer, instead of simply giving users a number.
Our vision is to help people understand their money, find opportunities to save, and eventually move money across borders through supported payment partners.
How We Built It
We designed MoneyOS around three connected components:
- Understand: Bring income, balances, bills, and spending information together.
- Optimize:Identify recurring expenses and potential savings opportunities.
- Move:Incorporate exchange rates, transfer fees, and cross-border payment considerations.
The AI financial assistant interprets questions and explains recommendations, while deterministic calculations handle the financial arithmetic. This separation is important because users should be able to understand and verify how a financial recommendation was calculated.
Our pitch demo uses illustrative account balances, bills, exchange rates, and transfer fees to demonstrate the experience. Live bank connections and real-money transfers through licensed partners are part of the planned roadmap, rather than capabilities claimed by the current demo.
What We Learned
We learned that a useful financial assistant needs to do more than categorize transactions or generate AI responses. It needs to consider the timing of income and expenses, explain its calculations, account for transfer costs, and make uncertainty visible.
We also learned that trust is essential when building financial technology. A recommendation is only useful when users understand where the numbers came from and what assumptions were used.
Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was combining personal financial planning with cross-border money movement without making the product too broad. Budgeting, exchange rates, international transfers, and financial forecasting each have different technical and operational requirements.
Another challenge was making the Safe-to-Spend calculation transparent and consistent. We designed MoneyOS so that the AI explains the results, but explicit rules perform the arithmetic.
Finally, real-world bank integrations, financial data access, and international payment regulations create additional challenges. Our approach is to validate the core financial-planning experience first and introduce cross-border transfers through appropriate licensed partners.
What's Next
We plan to validate MoneyOS with real users, test whether its forecasts and savings recommendations are useful, and develop read-only financial integrations. Our longer-term goal is to support a US–India payment corridor through licensed partners before expanding to additional countries.
MoneyOS aims to help people understand their money, optimize their finances, and make smarter decisions about spending and sending money across borders.
