Inspiration
Every month I'd look at my bank balance and wonder where it all went. Budgeting apps showed me charts, but none of them actually helped. I wanted a money buddy that just tells me what's going on and handles the annoying stuff.
What it does
- Momo, an AI companion connected to your real accounts. Ask "Can I spend $300 this weekend?" and get a straight answer
- Safe to spend: how much you can use today without touching bills or goals
- Refund Watch: tracks refunds you're owed and nudges you if they don't show up
- Subscription cleanup: finds recurring charges and helps you cancel them
- Transactions your way: rename, split and auto-file merchants once, forever
- Budgets, goals and weekly reviews that read like sentences, not spreadsheets
How we built it
- App: Expo + React Native, Reanimated and Skia for the smooth Momo animations
- Backend: Fastify, Postgres with Drizzle, BullMQ workers for background insights
- AI: LangGraph agent with memory, tool calls and a reply verifier that checks every number against real data
- Bank connections: Quiltt · Auth: Clerk · Subscriptions: RevenueCat
- Monitoring: Sentry + PostHog · Landing page: Vite + React
Challenges we ran into
- Stopping an AI from making up numbers. We built evals and a verifier so Momo only says what your data backs up
- Letting Momo take actions (like cancelling a subscription) safely, with approval gates for anything risky
- Messy bank data: pending vs. posted duplicates, weird merchant names, split bills
- Making a finance app feel warm and cute without losing trust
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Momo actually does things, not just chats
- A character people smile at when they open a finance app
- Answers grounded in real accounts, checked before they're shown
- A polished, shipped iOS app, built end to end
What we learned
- Trust is the product. One wrong number and people stop listening
- Small, specific answers beat big dashboards
- Personality matters, even in finance
What's next for Moneymo
- Momo Autopilot: more hands-off actions, like bill reminders and moving money to goals
- Home screen widgets for your daily money check
- Shared budgets for couples and roommates
- More languages and more banks
