Inspiration
As college students, we sometimes struggle to save money, especially with Dunkin' and UberEats right at our fingertips. After taking a finance class this semester, we were inspired to help other students like us manage their money responsibly.
What It Does
MoneyMind is an app that takes your post-tax income and recommends a 50-30-20 split of your money into needs, wants, and savings, respectively. However, these percentages can be adjusted based on your situation. As you spend, the app deducts expenses from your allocations, showing you how much remains in each category. For your wants, you can customize how the budget is distributed among categories of your choice—for example, allocating 10% to Dunkin or 20% to Ulta. This flexibility allows you to manage your spending while also developing healthy financial habits.
How We Built It
We utilized HTML, JavaScript, and CSS to create a website for our money budgeting. We also used Canva to create inspiration for what our app would look like.
Challenges We Ran Into
Half of our team wasn't familiar with HTML, so it took time to learn the language and try to implement it into our app. This led to some struggles trying to organize and format the website and add multiple pages to our website.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We have a functioning website and our idea is something we are passionate about exploring more. We are excited to see what's next for MoneyMind!
What We Learned
As mentor and mentee of the SEED2S program, we worked closely together to create a website. As the mentee, I had no experience creating a website and had little to no experience working with languages other than Java. My mentor partnered with me to build off this idea and grow it to what it is. She guided me throughout the entire process, helping me learn how to make a website, how to organize it, and how to plan out my thoughts to make our idea a reality. She helped me learn the ins and outs of Github. We also utilized HTML to create the content of the website, CSS for styling, and JavaScript to connect the different pages and navigate.
What's Next For MoneyMind
We will continue working on this idea, and hopefully develop a functioning app soon!
