Inspiration
According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the average household in America holds $104,215 in debt! Many individuals living in this country are one or a few missing paychecks away from losing it all. Yet, a lifestyle and image of heavy consumerism is still pushed through nearly every possible outlet. At the same time, financial literacy is not a required subject in schools. Minority and immigrant populations are some of the groups that suffer most. The financial system of the US is often significantly different from that of the countries immigrants arrive from, not to mention language barriers. For both groups, the access to information is scattered and only there if someone knows how to seek it. After personally seeing so many of my people in Miami struggling to make ends meet, Moneymate rose out of my wish for teaching people financial literacy so they may improve their lives.
What it does
In Moneymate, the idea is that the user creates a profile outlining the financial goals most important to them. Based on factors such as their language and their goals, they can look for an accountability partner that aligns well with them.
Challenges we ran into
Hacking solo this year showed me the value of a team even more than before. There were a lot of aspects I wanted to add into my project, but my scope was greatly limited because I was solely responsible for all the components. I have a self-admitted weakness in setting up back-ends, so I endeavored to learn it more deeply for this project. It was not very intuitive for me and posed a great challenge, but I pushed forward to build what I could.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite sometimes getting stuck for over an hour, I built something tangible! I overcame my fear of backends too! My vision for Moneymate is ultimately visible in the hackathon's product.
What's next for Moneymate
With more time to work on this project, I'd add the dedicated creation and management of user profiles. I also want to learn and implement AI algorithms that enhance the matching experience.
