Inspiration
MoneyLens was inspired by a simple but common problem: most people want to manage their money better, but many finance tools feel too complex or overwhelming for everyday use. I wanted to build something practical, clean, and approachable that helps users understand where their money goes and make better financial decisions with confidence.
What it does
MoneyLens is a personal finance and budgeting application that helps users track income and expenses, organize transactions, and view their financial activity clearly. The goal is to make day-to-day money management easier through a straightforward interface and useful spending insights.
How we built it
We built MoneyLens as a full-stack project using a Java-based backend for core application logic and data handling, JavaScript for interactive frontend behavior, and CSS for styling and layout. We focused on creating a smooth connection between backend data processing and a user-friendly frontend experience so users can add, view, and manage financial records efficiently.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was designing reliable transaction handling while keeping the user experience simple. Financial data needs to be accurate and consistent, so validation and edge-case handling were important. Another challenge was balancing functionality with usability—adding meaningful features without making the interface cluttered or difficult to navigate.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of building a complete, working finance app that combines backend structure with a clean frontend experience. We created a tool that solves a real-world problem, improved both technical implementation and UI thinking, and delivered a project that is both practical and extensible.
What we learned
Through MoneyLens, we learned how to design and connect full-stack systems more effectively, structure financial workflows, and build interfaces that keep users engaged without unnecessary complexity. We also strengthened our skills in debugging, feature iteration, and making technical decisions based on user experience.
What's next for MoneyLens
Next, we plan to add smarter analytics and insights, recurring transaction support, budget goal tracking, and improved visual reporting with charts/dashboards. We also want to improve authentication/security, optimize performance, and enhance mobile responsiveness so MoneyLens can become a more complete personal finance companion.
