Inspiration
Honestly? Ten-month-old baby, sleepless nights, bills piling up faster than the laundry 😅 I went from commanding rooms as a celebrant to feeling completely overwhelmed by the simplest money decisions. And I kept thinking—if I'm struggling with this, how many other mums are too? We're told to budget, meal plan, compare prices… but who has the headspace for that when you're running on three hours of sleep? I wanted something that actually fit into my life as a mum. No guilt, no complexity—just quick wins that add up.
What it does
Money Mumma breaks down money-saving into bite-sized tasks we call Money Moves. Each one takes 3-10 minutes and shows you the time, effort, and potential savings upfront. Filed your tax return? That's a Money Move. Switched to Aldi? Money Move. Sold clothes you don't wear? Money Move. You build your own to-do list, complete tasks when you're ready, and watch your total savings grow. There's also an Explore page where real mums share what's worked for them—no AI-generated nonsense, just authentic tips from people who get it. Plus a Growth Projector that shows how your savings could grow over time if you reinvest them.
How we built it
We built Money Mumma using Expo for the mobile app, with RevenueCat handling subscriptions, and tools like Mobbin for design inspiration and Appfigures for analytics. But honestly, the most important part was testing with real mums from day one. Every feature exists because a mum said "I wish I could…" or "This would actually help me if…" My co-founder Kyle brought the technical chops to make it secure and scalable while I made sure it stayed grounded in real-life chaos.
Challenges we ran into
Setting up app subscriptions was… a journey 😬 First time doing it, and we got a few things wrong initially. The learning curve was steep! But the RevenueCat docs were a lifesaver—super clear and practical. Once we discovered the MCP server to integrate the paywall, things got way easier. It plugged straight into our IDE and saved us so much time. Still, there were definitely moments of "why isn't this working?!" followed by 2am debugging sessions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built something that actually helps people! Real mums are using it, saving real money, and sharing their wins with each other 🎉 I'm proud that every single feature is free—no paywalls hiding the good stuff. The optional $1/month support with 50% going to Mum for Mum feels like the right way to do this. And honestly? Seeing someone's savings total hit $3,000 and getting their message saying "this changed how I think about money"—that's everything.
What we learned
Technical stuff: app subscriptions are complex but totally doable with good documentation and the right tools. Human stuff: mums don't need another app telling them what they're doing wrong—they need permission to take small steps and celebrate wins. Also, real user feedback is everything. We've thrown out features we loved because mums were like "yeah but I'd never actually use that." Building for real behavior, not assumptions, is the only way.
What's next for Money Mumma
We want to add personalised savings plans that adapt to where you're at—whether you're just getting started or crushing your goals. Smarter reminders that actually fit into your routine (not just annoying notifications). And we're exploring simple, manageable investment portfolios designed specifically for mums who want to make their savings work harder but don't know where to start. Long-term vision? Money Mumma becomes the go-to community for mums taking control of their finances—one small win at a time 💪
