Inspiration: We were looking for scholarships to help pay for college. We noticed that there wasn't a platform that helped students track the total money they owed and helped them track scholarships. Student Loan Debt has become a major problem in the US, recently becoming the second biggest form of consumer debt. Many people sign up for big debts, without even knowing if it's worth it, and if they can pay it off. We think a solution to this is providing a platform for all people to help calculate the money they owe, and get resources on how to pay off debt. Ultimately, we believe that students should focus on their education, not the weight of debt.
What it does: The App has 3 main features. 1) A scholarship tracker: This feature helps you calculate your total student loan debt and helps you reduce it by adding scholarships(both merit and need-based). 2) An interest calculator: Given the cost of attending your college and the standard interest rate, we calculate the total monthly payments, helping students budget for their education. 3)A list of useful resources to help students reduce the total money owed.
How we built it: We used Python Flask to build the backend and HTML/CSS/BOOTSTRAP for the frontend.
What's next for Money Buddy: We would like to add a feature that automatically suggests scholarships based on your family's income and merit. We would also like to improve the UI interface and make it compatible for mobile as well.
