About Momo

Inspiration Students often have to turn long lecture slides, notes, and textbooks into useful study materials on their own. We wanted to make that process easier—and make it easier to trust the results. That idea became Momo: a friendly study companion that helps learners review what’s actually in their course materials.

What It Does Momo turns uploaded documents into flashcards, quizzes, summaries, and other study materials. Its AI tutor can answer questions with citations to relevant pages or sections. Study sets are designed to remain available after the original document expires, and learners can review downloaded materials offline.

How We Built It We built the mobile app with React Native, Expo, and TypeScript, with a FastAPI backend and Supabase for data and authentication. The document pipeline extracts and chunks uploaded files, retrieves relevant passages, then sends that evidence to NVIDIA Nemotron through OpenRouter. Generated content is validated before it becomes part of a study set. Expo SQLite supports offline review and later progress sync.

What We Learned Building an AI study tool takes more than connecting a model to a chat box. The quality of the source material, retrieval, citations, and validation all matter. We also learned to design around the full lifecycle of study content: source documents can be temporary, while the useful reviewers students create from them should persist.

Challenges One of our biggest challenges was making answers useful without letting the model fill gaps with unsupported facts. We designed Momo to rely on retrieved course material and report when the evidence is insufficient. We also had to bring together document extraction, AI generation, mobile storage, and synchronization while keeping the app responsive and study materials usable offline.
