‘mommi’ is a supportive planner that combines warmth and accountability to help users stay disciplined and on track. Inspired by our own struggles with productivity and reflecting on our mothers’ effective nagging, we chose to recreate the tangible experience of having your mom, a parental figure who keeps track of your daily tasks, offers emotional support, and nudges you.
Whether it’s reminding us to simply drink water, check in on our day, or telling us to stop procrastinating, many of us rely on our moms for that comfort and support. We wanted to translate this tangible experience into a digital form that is functional and emotionally resonant.
In this project, we aimed to bridge productivity and comfort. Where traditional productivity apps only focus on function, we wanted to take a step further and add a layer of emotional resonance. By having this shared emotional context, it makes our app not only effective but also deeply familiar and comforting.
In terms of design process we began, as all projects do, with brainstorming. We each came up with a wide variety of experiences we wanted to digitalize, from doctors visits to organizing your closet, and eventually we landed on ‘mommi’. After finalizing our idea, we noted the specific tangible experiences we wanted to translate into digital features (consistent and personalized reminders, pep-talks, and video calling) and explored competitor apps and other sources of inspiration to guide our design direction. Our goal was to create a playful and minimalistic design, incorporating typical ‘mom language’ and animations to bring the platform to life.
We learned a lot though the process and even experimented with some new platforms like Spline which we utilized to design and animate the figure representing the mom. With 4 different people working at the same time on the same app, it was hard to keep our design styles consistent at times. However through the use of styles and components we were able to achieve a cohesive look and feel to the experience.
