Inspiration

We were inspired by a problem that every student faces: procrastination, distraction, and uncertainty about how long work will take. Productivity often feels like a chore, and staying motivated can be isolating, especially in a world filled with distractions like social media that are only a click away.

We wanted to reimagine focus as something fun, social, and intelligent. What if your productivity app worked with your brain, not against it?

That's how Momentum was born.

What it does

Momentum is a competitive productivity app powered by AI time estimation. Here's how it works:

  • AI Time Estimator: Learns from your past behavior to estimate how long a task should take you.
  • Beat the Clock: Stay focused and finish on time to earn points. If you procrastinate or get distracted, you lose them.
  • Live Sync Races: Challenge your friends in real-time “livesyncs” to race through your own tasks.
  • Custom Avatars: Compete as a turtle or rabbit!

Momentum blends personalized AI with friendly competition to make productivity feel like a game.

How we built it

We built our prototype in Figma, designed user flows, and created a working app walkthrough video. We also created a presentation with Canva.

Key steps included:

  • Surveying students to understand real focus and procrastination pain points
  • Building a user persona and use case journey
  • Sketching wireframes and flows for onboarding, task timing, and social features
  • Designing competitive elements like live sync and avatars

We also ideated around how an AI system could learn from user patterns (like task type, distractions, and completion speed) to make accurate time predictions.

Challenges we ran into

  • We were overambitious at first — too many features, too many directions.
  • It was tough to shape our idea into something that aligned tightly with the "Design for Uncertainty" prompt.
  • We had to simplify and focus on what made us different: combining personalized AI with gamified motivation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We created a clear, cohesive product with a unique edge in the productivity space.
  • We learned how to use Figma, write surveys, and create engaging personas.
  • We told a compelling story that connects real user struggles to new technology in a fun, human way.

What we learned

  • How to design for uncertainty by focusing on decision paralysis and mental load.
  • That good design is not just visual — it’s about solving real problems.
  • The value of iteration — our final idea was very different from where we started.

We also learned how to scope our vision, cut features, and focus on a core experience.

What's next for Momentum

We’d love to:

  • Build out a working prototype using a time-tracking AI model
  • Integrate with Google Docs and university email systems for real assignment syncing
  • Add more competitive modes (like AI-generated quiz battles and weekly leaderboards)
  • Test with real students to fine-tune motivation mechanics

In the future, we want Momentum to help anyone — not just students — turn focus into fun, and productivity into progress.
