Momentum is a moment-first AI coaching app designed to help people move from clarity to action by starting with the exact moment they’re in.

Inspiration

“We designed Momentum to be as calm and intentional as a meditation app — but focused on helping users make real decisions and move forward.” — Inspired by the Shipyard 2026 brief

Most AI coaching products start with a chat box.

But in the moments when people actually need coaching — when they’re stuck, overwhelmed, or trying to decide — a blank input becomes friction. Users are forced to think how to ask before they can focus on what to do.

This project started from a simple question:

What if AI coaching didn’t start with conversation, but with the moment someone is in?

Instead of asking users to browse or configure coaches, Momentum uses a moment-first system where users select their current state (e.g. I’m stuck, I need to decide, I need to reset). The app then applies a predefined coaching pattern tailored to that moment.

The goal is not more AI — it’s less cognitive load.

What I learned

Building this project reinforced a few key lessons:

  • Constraints beat customization. Removing choice often creates more clarity than adding features.
  • Structure matters more than raw intelligence. Well-designed inputs and outputs consistently outperform free-form chat for reflective use cases.
  • Monetization works best when it extends continuity, not power. Users don’t need “stronger AI” — they value seeing their thinking over time.

I also learned the importance of designing AI products around behavioral moments, not just technical capabilities.

How it was built

Momentum is a fully working mobile MVP built with:

  • Flutter for cross-platform mobile development
  • OpenRouter for real AI inference with structured outputs
  • RevenueCat for subscription management and paywall gating
  • Local storage for moment history and progression

Each mode maps to a specific coaching pattern with:

  • constrained inputs
  • structured responses
  • clear next actions

The system is intentionally minimal: no chat history scrolling, no prompt tuning, no role configuration. The product is designed to feel calm, focused, and shippable.

Challenges

The biggest challenge was removing features rather than adding them.

Momentum is designed to be useful in under two minutes — exactly when clarity matters most.
