Inspiration
I always wanted an app that would adapt to my needs—one that knows my personality, habits, and daily patterns to suggest everything to maximize my productivity. After searching and finding nothing like it, we decided to build one ourselves.
What it does
Momentum AI learns everything about the user over time—courses, assignments, finances, skills, habits, and preferences. By continuously building context, it maximizes productivity through personalized AI-powered recommendations, planning, and insights. Everything is managed through one intelligent assistant that understands you completely.
How we built it
We used the PERN stack (PostgreSQL, Express, React, Node.js) for the core application, FastAPI for the AI backend, LangChain with ChromaDB for vector storage and retrieval, and the Gemini API for natural language processing. The app is also PWA-supported for offline access and mobile-first experience.
Challenges we ran into
The frontend and basic backend implementation were straightforward, but optimizing the AI context proved challenging. We had to:
- Minimize the context window for performance while maintaining accuracy
- Implement efficient chunking strategies with ChromaDB
- Connect the AI layer seamlessly with our main backend architecture
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The challenges taught us valuable lessons about context optimization, vector databases, and AI-backend integration. Most importantly, we now have the app we always wanted for ourselves—one that truly understands and adapts to student needs.
What we learned
We gained hands-on experience with:
- LangChain and ChromaDB for context-aware AI systems
- Balancing context window size with performance constraints
- Integrating FastAPI with traditional backend architectures for AI workloads
What's next for Momentum AI
We're eager to commercialize Momentum AI. We know many students want tools that genuinely help them manage academic life, and we believe our context-aware approach fills that gap. Our next steps include:
- Refining the AI recommendations
- Expanding integrations with educational platforms
- Preparing for a public launch
