Inspiration

When my mom was diagnosed with dementia a couple of months ago, it hit us all hard. I wanted to find a way to preserve her memories and create something meaningful for future generations.

That’s how I came up with Momento. This app is my way of capturing and celebrating the stories and experiences that matter most. It allows families to document memories and engage in meaningful interactions, helping to enhance cognitive function and strengthen emotional bonds.

I truly believe that by sharing these memories, we can create a lasting legacy of love and remembrance. Momento is my hope for others facing similar challenges, providing a way to keep their loved ones' histories alive and cherished.

What it does

  • Chat with an AI that understands and engages in meaningful conversations.
  • Quiz patients on their memories, including names, birthdays, places of birth, and family members.
  • Preserve and document personal stories for future generations.
  • Provide tailored responses to family questions based on the patient's memories.
  • Help improve cognitive function through interactive memory exercises.
  • Create a user-friendly interface designed for all ages.

How we built it

We developed our application using React Native, Expo, and TypeScript for the front end, ensuring a seamless user experience across platforms. For the back end, we utilized Firebase for secure storage of user information and AI logs, enabling efficient data management. Additionally, we integrated Google Gemini to facilitate meaningful conversations, enhancing user engagement and interaction. This combination of technologies allows us to create a robust, responsive, and intelligent application that meets our users' needs.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered several challenges during the development process. Initially, when Apple released new iPhone updates, we faced numerous bugs that required careful troubleshooting. Additionally, integrating React Native with Google Gemini presented its own difficulties, as resources and information were scarce. We also experienced a current issue with images not displaying correctly in the assets, attributed to the ongoing updates.

Another significant challenge was designing a dashboard that is both intuitive and aesthetically appealing. We aimed to avoid a design that resembled traditional "elderly" interfaces, focusing instead on creating a user experience that is engaging and accessible for all age groups. Through these challenges, we remained committed to delivering a high-quality application that meets the needs of our users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We take great pride in our ability to train the AI to engage effectively with patients, ensuring meaningful interactions. The development of this application has been a significant commitment, and we are dedicated to creating a solution that truly meets the needs of users and their families. Our team has invested considerable effort into making this application functional, user-friendly, and impactful.

What we learned

We gained valuable insights into utilizing Google Gemini and adapting to Expo's new interface, which significantly streamlined our debugging process. Additionally, we conducted extensive research on how colors influence cognitive function and deepened our understanding of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. This knowledge has been instrumental in shaping a more effective and user-friendly application.

What's next for Momento

  • Adding Family system
  • Adding a way to add photos and audio recordings for gemini to learn from
  • Add notifications to remind patients to check the app
