Inspiration
During the COVID-19 pandemic, small "mom-and-pop" businesses floundered while the E-Commerce industry saw a colossal surge in revenue. We plan to bridge these two worlds together during the recovery era in order to support individual livelihoods and foster local communities.
What it does
Mom & Pop is a platform tailored specifically towards opening potential E-Commerce ventures for technologically illiterate business owners and connecting them to local customers through intuitive, user-friendly interface and tutorials.
How we built it
Our team used Google Forms and Google Sheets API for easy 1-click user data entry, Google Maps and Geocoder to calculate the most convenient shopping locations, and a Nicepage website run on flask to professionally display the business and customer's options.
Challenges we ran into
For 75% of our team, this was our first hack-a-thon! We ran into a few challenges we'd never considered before–like spending more than two hours trying to install Python onto our laptops–but were able to power through regardless. Special shout-out to all the mentors for their amazing assistance!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First and foremost, we did end up getting Python installed. Aside from that, we were able to accomplish our goal of branching different languages together in order to create one cohesive and intuitive homepage. We also successfully managed employing completely unfamiliar languages, such as JavaScript and HTML, into our project.
What we learned
Switching between programming languages in our code was hard, but necessary if we wanted to yield a cool product. When in doubt, just Google it. Also, power naps should be encouraged (20 minutes ideally).
What's next for Mom & Pop
Plans are still tentative–we still have ways to go with web development. But we plan to add authentication, billing, and efficiency improvements in our algorithm. We also intend to add more instructional content to aid those who are less tech savvy familiarize themselves with E-Commerce.
